This sign: marks vowels that should be stressed in words (e.g. in “snowboarding” it would be “snow’boarding”)

“y” is the sound between “ai” and “i”, unless in combination with letters “u”, “e”, “a”, “o” where it makes a new sound that is a mix between “i” and the letter followed after “y”.
