US hit by major storms

Conditions in Europe have been taking centre stage this season with an exceptional start to the season, however things have been pretty quiet of late and in many resorts in Switzerland & Austria pistes are pretty bullet and you can forgot about anything fluffy if you venture off-piste; so step in USA.

Silverton Mtn in Colorado has received 1m of fresh in the last 24hrs, Grand Targhee 45cm. California hasn't escaped with Bear Mountain getting whopping 75cm dump in 24hrs, and the Tahoe resorts are reporting easily some of the best conditions of the season. Utah resorts haven't got anywhere near the dumps Colorado & California received but its still enough for Europe and especially Canada to look enviously at.

Winter arrived in Aspen/Snowmass last night with up to a foot of snow falling on the upper slopes and cold temperatures that allowed snowmaking guns to be fired up. The snow is still falling and a series of storms are lined up to move through the area in the next week

The Environment Canada Alpine Forecast is calling for a snowfall accumulation of between five and 10 centimetres today with the freezing level hovering between 900 and 1,100 metres. Whistler Village is 675m, so that means the snow is almost down the valley. According to the five-day outlook, there will be a slight clearing in the weather Wednesday, while another storm materializes Thursday and hits with snow Friday

We’re poised and ready to step in once this storm passes,” says Jodie McCutcheon, Whistler Blackcomb’s snowmaking manager. “We have between 180 and 220 snow guns set up and ready to go. As soon as the storm stops, we’ll fire up. Also both reservoirs on both mountains are full, that’s 52 million gallons of water, ready to support the snowmaking effort.

Ok before you give me a load of grief that there's a skier on this website, would it help to say that a foot of snow fell at Silverton Mtn in Colorado? Probably not, i'm sorry it won't happen again. Apparently though, as the ski patrol arrived at the mountain today to do some pre- season work they discovered great snow conditions and went skiing.

Whistler update

47 days until Whistler opens apparently. Here's one for you stat fans; on average each year Whistler Blackcomb’s snowmaking team turns 130 million plus gallons of water into 650 acres/feet of snow. This is the equivalent of a football field covered in snow 650 feet high or the height of a 65 story building. I wonder what the electricity bill is for that??

Arapahoe Basin began making snow last Sunday night and continues to make snow nightly. A-Basin’s full force of eighteen snow guns have been running from Black Mountain Lodge to the base area on the intermediate High Noon run. A-Basin officials would like to have a minimum base of 18” before they open the slopes for the season. Although no definite opening date has been set, progress has been good and opening day should not be far away.

Jason from snowmotions sent us these shots from the first snow at Lenzerheide where they are currently getting their new chalet sorted for the forthcoming season.
