2010 Freeride World Tour Nissan Chamonix

Chamonix is probably the world’s most renowned alpine resort. Host of the first ever official Winter Olympics Games way back in 1924, skiers and snowboarders now come from all over the world to take on its vast range of steep “couloirs” against the backdrop of the Mont Blanc.

When it comes to freeride locations few can rival Chamonix, so it’s no surprise that in 2010 it joins the tour as a main stop for the first time.

FWT ski world champion Aurelien Ducroz, who was born and bred in Chamonix, will be the hometown favourite and looking to maximise points on the south facing Brevent. An early morning descent on this magnificent face directly opposite the Mont Blanc is a box that all serious skiers from around the world simply have to tick.

Xavier de Le Rue wins the Xtreme Verbier 2011
The Nissan Xtreme Verbier was the last event in the 2011 Freeride World Tour for the year, and it was Frenchman Xavier De Le Rue who took the final honours, Britains James Stentiford was once again on the podium. In the womens event Anne-Flore Marxer took both the event and the tour title. -20Mar11

The Freeride World Tour headed to Fieberbrunn in Austria in the last event before Verbier and it was Austrians Mitch Toelderer and Max Zipser who took the first two podium spots, and british rider James Stentiford took 3rd -12Mar11

Chamonix, France

Chamonix offers some truly excellent freeriding and great natural freestyle terrain. It's not great for beginners and can suffer if there's not much snow. It's rough round the edges - but therein lies its charm. If you can, wait until there's fresh snow then jump in your car.

Freeriding: 95% - Tree runs & amazing off-piste
Freestyle: 70% - Half-pipe but great natural
Pistes: 60% - Spread out & ungroomed slopes
