O'Neil Pro-Freestyle Quarterpipe, Avoriaz
30 Jan-2 Feb 07
The ONeill Pro Freestyle, a prestigious TTR 5(FIVE)STAR event on the Ticket To Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour, is preparing to welcome some of Europes most promising riders for the start of the event on Tuesday, 30th January 2007.
After the poor snow conditions affecting much of the Alps during this early season period, were very happy to report that fresh snowfalls over the last week have finally kick-started the European snowboard season in pure winter style. The abundant fresh snowfalls have also provided contest shapers, led by master-shaper Claes Hoegstrom, with everything they need to construct the gigantic Quarterpipe, measuring an astonishing 20m x 10m x 10m.
The Quarterpipe contest has also provided a whole host of pro riders with all the motivation they could wish for to come to Avoriaz and compete against one another. A total of 16 seeded men and 6 seeded women will lead the Quarterpipe onslaught and hope to keep the up-and-coming rippers at bay.
In the mens event, the likes of Olympic gold medalist Gian Simmen, Finnish duo Janne Korpi and Miika Haast and Norways on-form transition specialist Henning Marthinson will all be battling it out in an attempt to pick up the 850 TTR Ranking points and $8,000 accompanying 1st place. These established riders wont have it easy, though freestyle snowboarding young guns including Fredrik Austbo and ONeill Evolution stand-out rider Dimi de Jong will be fighting hard to claim their share of the spoils. On top of all that, riders like Canadian Marc-Andre Tart, JJ Roux, Arthur Longo, Darius Heristchian and Germanys Alex Schmaltz will also be rolling into town to fight it out.
The womens Quarterpipe contest, meanwhile, promises to go off with a bang, with the likes of Womens TTR World Snowboard Champion 05/06 Cheryl Maas, ONeill rider Caroline Beliard and Austrias amplitude queen Lisa Filzmoser all clocking in for the show. Meanwhile, Frances promising young hope Margot Rozies will be hoping that the home support will boost her into a podium position.
As well as the Quarterpipe contest, the ONeill Pro Freestyle will also play host to two progressive City Sessions, showcasing some of Europes finest rail talents. With one Session scheduled to take place in the day and the other at night, therell be no shortage of electrifying action in the resort of Avoriaz itself.
If youre not able to make it to Avoriaz to catch all the action, and sneak off for some fresh powder turns, then make sure you take it all via a live webcast on Friday 2nd February, from 15.30 19.30
