King of Quarters, Apsen Mountain
25-26 February
Red Bull athletes Travis Rice and Tanner Hall are scheduled to compete in the inaugural King of Quarters event, the first ever quarterpipe competition on Aspen Mountain, January 25 and 26, from 5 – 7 p.m. Snowboarders will compete on Friday, January 25, while skiers will compete on Saturday, January 26.
This new invitational event will feature some of the world’s best male skiers and snowboarders competing under the lights for a total of $30,000 in cash and prizes. The massive quarterpipe has been under construction on Little Nell run at Aspen Mountain for two weeks and will be finished with a hand shaped transition in the next week.

Aspen/Snowmass Athlete Peter Olenick is among other confirmed athletes, along with skiers Sammy Carlson, TJ Schiller, Stefan Thomas, John Symms, Sean Field, Justin Dorey and Mike Riddle. Confirmed snowboarders include Shane Posspisal, Nate Farrell and Elijah Teter.
Invited skiers Jon Olson, Simon Dumont, Charles Gagnier and others are expected to confirm their participation along with snowboarders including Danny Davis, Sammy Luebke, Anti Autti and Keir Dillon.
There will be plenty of activity in gondola plaza throughout Winter X Games weekend. The weekend will begin on Thursday January 24 at 5:30 p.m. with the second Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert of the season featuring a widely anticipated performance by Dinosaur Jr.
The snowboard competition will serve as the only North American qualifying event for the Oakley Arctic Challenge in Norway. Oakley will award the overall winner and the rider reaching the highest air expenses paid trips and invitations to compete in Norway.
Just before the ski competition on Saturday, D&E Ski and Snowboard Shop in Aspen,
across the street from Gondola Plaza, will host an athlete signing from 4 – 5 p.m. featuring Sarah Burke, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Colby West and Steele Spence.
The King of Quarters quarterpipe construction is being led by Frank Wells, of the Aspen/Snowmass terrain park crew, and in partnership with Snow Park Technologies (SPT). The event will be walking distance from Gondola Plaza.
The King of Quarters event is sponsored by Sprint, W.L. Gore and Associates, Salomon, Bud Light, Red Bull, Oakley, Helly Hansen, American Express and D&E Ski and Snowboard Shop.
