Things are heating up with 421 girls looking to capture every vote they can
The If Ullr Was A Girl contest is heating up with 421 girls looking to capture every vote they can. February 19 marks the final day of phase one of Whistler Blackcomb's North America-wide contest to crown the ultimate mountain girl.
Phase two of the contest begins February 21 when votes are counted and the top three Amateur and the top three Open category athletes (six in total) are awarded 7-day 6-night trips to Whistler, BC from anywhere in North America. They will battle for the Ullr crown at the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival (TWSSF).
In addition to the women with the most votes on the site, we will be inviting up to ten more skiers and snowboarders from the contest to come out to Whistler to battle it out for the Ullr Girl Crown,” says Meredith Armstrong, Brand Marketing Manager at Whistler Blackcomb. “We will have the most talented women on snow competing for the title and $25,000 in cold, hard cash in front of the ski and snowboard media, industry and spectators this April.”
On March 1, the ifullrwasagirl.com site will relaunch showcasing only the finalists and invited athletes. The votes they gather from March 1 until the close of the contest will contribute to one-quarter of their final standing in the contest. However, the athletic events at TWSSF will be the true proving grounds with a big mountain event as well as participation in the Stompede, a sanctioned TWSSF slopestyle event. The fourth component will be mountain culture; where each athlete will be asked to pick an art form such as photography, film, art, or music to present during a special evening event as a part of the Festival.
All four categories will carry equal weight and the finalists will be awarded points for their ranking in each event. The grand prize winners in the Open category and the Amateur category will be the two athletes who accumulate the most points after all four categories are totaled.
Whistler Blackcomb’s contest is seeing great success with word of mouth driving much of the traffic to the website and participant numbers growing in leaps and bounds. Many girls have also been hard at work with their own PR initiatives. Amateur snowboarder Alison Pasemko of Whistler BC enticed Much Music’s 969 television program to profile her quest for the crown Canada-wide. Lynsey Dyer, a skier from Jackson Hole WY, has utilized media contacts and press releases to further her dream of winning the $25,000 to start a scholarship fund for SheJumps.com, an online community of women sharing their journeys as they strive for - and accomplish - their life goals on and off the snow. Joanna Dzierzawski, a snowboarder from South Lake Tahoe, scored a blog on Heavenly’s website; she’s rallying votes to win the opportunity to come out to Whistler to compete for the title.
We are thrilled and overwhelmed by the positive response from women for this contest. It is very exciting to be able to provide these women with the opportunity to showcase their talents during the TWSSF and to reward them significantly for it, says Armstrong. “It is evident in every park, and powder-covered slope that women are killing it and through this contest we hope to bring the talents and prowess of these women into the limelight even more.”
Full contest information and rules, as well as details on posting an athlete profile, nominating a girl, voting or applying to be a judge, are available on-line at www.ifullrwasagirl.com.
