Louie Vito picks up X-Games Gold in the Superpipe

American Louie Vito double-corked his way onto the winners podium, closely followed by last years winner iPod and Swiss youngster Christian Haller took home the bronze medal

Louie Vito (22 years old) takes home a gold medal in the final for the Winter X Games Snowboarding’s main event: the SuperPipe. Iouri Podladtchikov, the Russian born Swiss rider and defending gold medallist came second followed by Christian Haller (CH). This was Christian’s first Winter X Games medal.
After his third place in Aspen at the beginning of the year, todays winner the Bellefontaine Ohio native, superseded his fellow competitors with a second run scored 93 points and included a back-to-back double cork 1080.

For Iouri Podladtchikov, who didn’t compete in Aspen this January due to an injury, this silver medal confirms that he can throw the biggest tricks and can step up when under pressure. The Moscow native incidentally said that this was his “best day of snowboarding this year”. His Swiss Olympic team-mate completes the podium.

The Alps have had very warm weather in recent days, although it is getting cooler again now and up to 50cm of snow has fallen on the Austrian, Swiss and German Alps in the past 2 days. in North America there have been still more big snowfalls with whistler receiving 30cm (a foot) in 24 hours and resorts in Utah reporting up to 1.4m (nearly five feet) of snow in the past week
