Thu 14 June 12
Last weekend saw a number of Australian resorts open for the 2012 season with snow conditions that bode well for the coming winter.
Falls Creek, Mt Buller and Mount Hotham all launched their seasons to packed slopes while Charlotte Pass plans to open on the 22nd of June.
At Falls Creek the season opening celebrations saw car parks and local accommodation at near to full capacity.
Resort publicist Debbie Howie said about the opening. "It's the busiest long weekend in a long time. Most properties are fully booked," Ms Howie said. "We probably haven't seen this level of interest since before the GFC (global financial crisis)."
The crowds at Falls creek were able to ride on average of 28cm of snow across the rersort which laid down an excellent base for the opening weekend. The other big talking point of the weekend was the Main street one of the resort most popular trails was open on the 1st day of the season for many years. The Falls Express chair and Mousetrap Poma were also in operation on the opening day.
Mt Buller also opened its doors with Opening Weekend celebrations that saw free skiing and snowboarding offered to thousand of guests. The Bourke Street piste was open for riders with a cover of manmade snow. The opening weekend also saw off the slope entertainment in the Village Square including live music, complimentary hot chocolate and free drinks. The night was finally ended with a huge opening firework show. The 2012 season at Mt Buller also sees the opening of the new Bonza Chairlift an exciting addition to the resort.
Elsewhere at Mount Hotham the Opening Weekend saw the best conditions since the year 2000 and Snow making throughout the night has enabled the Roadrunner Quad Chair to open. This season the Big D Quad, Summit Quad, Summit Trainer and Roadrunner will also run for skiing and boarding. The conditions at Mount Hotham look set to improve this coming weekend with snow set to fall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
More information on the current snow conditions and latest snowboard events will be appearing throughout the season.
