The Heli Season Starts in Silverton
Not wanting to be outdone by the Silverton Mountain ski patrol skiing this past Saturday in Colorado, the Silverton Mountain Guides Alaska heli skiing crew made the first turns of the season yesterday.
After a steady week of September snowfall in Alaska, the heli ski guide crew fired up the chopper and went skiing and snowboarding yesterday. What they found was incredible knee deep powder and miles and miles of untracked snow.

The Silverton Mountain Guides Alaska Heli team took 10 runs, each steeper than the previous run as they discovered the snow was deep and stable. On a film run down a 55 degree Alaskan face (mind you it was September 26) one of the pros got a little over zealous and was hit by his sluff cascading down the mountain behind him which knocked him off his feet and he cartwheeled over a huge ice cliff. The fresh snow and current ski conditions are some of the best ever encountered and made for a fantastic opening day to the 2016-17 Alaska Heli Ski season.
Silverton Mountain Guides Alaska Heli is entering their 9th season of operation in Alaska and has bases of operation in Seward, Girdwood, and the Northern Chugach. They are the only heli ski operation anywhere in Alaska that runs heli skiing trips in the months November, December and January. With the fantastic early conditions Silverton Mountain Guides is considering opening for the season even earlier including October this year.
