Wengen, Switzerland

Wengen the best known village of the Jungfrau region which includes the three ride areas of Kleine Scheidegg, Grindelwald-First and Murren, it has a big reputaion to live up to but like a Swiss cheese it’s full of holes. Yes there’s lots of terrain to be riden, 213km, and you can often find a fresh line days after a dump, but the lift system is disjointed and the black runs are more like a hard French blue and the mulitude of paths you need to navigate to get anywhere will soon piss you right off. The pistes are full of old school skiers and you can offten ride for an hour without seeing another boarder and when you do they’ll often be in hard boots and in an all in one ski suit, although Grindelwald- First has a bit of a board scean going on.
Things aren’t as expensive as you might think but its not cheap by any standard and a week will set you back plenty of doller, it’s around the same prices as London. All the main resort Hotels are expencive and night life is dull, so if you want a party bring a lot of friends or take up yodaling. One way to save cash is staying down the valley in Interlaken which has some backpakers hostels and a few cool bars, Jamming Coner is well chilled with water pipes on offer and for a madder night try Hooters where the female staff all wear hotpants and tight tops and the football and sports always on, Buddies is like a uk pub. The main draw back with Innterlaken is you’ll be getting up at six in the morning if you want to get first lift.

The Mountain resort area is truly beautiful, with the Eiger and its north face stealing the shown and the mountain trains are quarkey but the novelty of traveling to the slopes on a train soon wears off, especially if the snows not down to resort and you have to down load. The three main areas aren’t really linked together unless you call catching a train or a bus linked, so you chose a hill for the day and stick to it.
