Flachau, Austria

Resort life

Given its size, the town is unnecessarily spread out along the main road. During the day the free ski buses will save your legs, but in the evening it’s a long walk or taxi. The main centre is around the Tourist Information on Dorfstrasse

Eating

There are some excellent food options here which aren’t all Austrian stodge and prices are a lot cheaper than you’ll find in many parts of Austria. The Schusterhöusl is a meat eaters dream and serves excellent steaks from 15euros, it is opposite the Spar supermarket. The Flachauer Gutshof has a daily carvery at a bargain 10euros. Next to Fire & Ice is La Luma which serves modern Italian food. Restaurant Kaiserstubin which is opposite the tourist information, does reasonable food including pizzas from 7euros and is the only place that has free wireless internet.

Self caterers will find a large M-Preis supermarket towards the edge of town, and there’s a Spar right in the town centre, that seems to sell more drinking games and silly hats than anything else, but bucking the normal trend, you’ll find it open on Sundays until 6pm.

Nightlife

You get a lot of Salzburg weekenders and day trippers, but there’s plenty of people who stay to party in the numerous bars. Most of the bars are on or around the main long street. The Musicstadl in the Flachauer Gutshof has live bands every night, although don’t expect U2 to turn up, it’s all après songs and Ooompah bands. Fire & Ice the trendiest place in town, and has guest DJ’s most nights and Downtown is another cool bar located on the main road. Hoo-Ruck is okay and Ema’s is the obligatory Irish bar which also has internet access. Après fans should checkout the Yeti’s party house in the Lacknerhof hotel.

Accomodation

There a number of pretty flash hotels that each have their own spa facilities, and some pretty garish ones like the Lacknerhof which looks like it’s been moved from Las Vegas. However the majority of places to stay have been built in the last 10 years and are of a high standard. Those on a budget should look into the many private Pensions that start from 25euros a night. There are numerous small villages around Flachau should you find it tricky to find anywhere and many are linked to the regular bus service.

Top place for beginners and intermediates but advanced riders will find it limiting after a short while. Freestylers will need to travel a short distance to the parks but it's well worth it. Buses link the huge area and the town is very spread out.
