St Johann In Tirol, Austria
St Johann in Tirol is Austrian through and through, read any one of the numerous ski guides and see how this place is often described as ‘quaint, charming, traditional, lovely and picturesque. And while these points are true, the important factor is, what has this traditional village to offer visiting snowboarderds? Well St Johann has some 60km of well groomed and well marked out pistes to ride serviced by a modern lift system comprising of 3 gondolas, 4 chair lifts and 10 drag lifts.
An important point to note about St Johann is that this is a very popular resort with a large number of British and German visitors. The resort is usually buzzing through the winter months especially over the Christmas and new year periods and from mid January through to the end of March.
Although this is not a high altitude resort, St Johann can still boast a decent annual snow record of over 780cm a season and should the real stuff not fall, the resort has snowmaking facilities that cover over 47% of the marked out slopes.
In terms of terrain, an advanced rider will have this place licked within a matter of two days, intermediates four days while beginners will enjoy a full week exploring the slopes, which are collection of reds, a handful of blacks and a load of easy blues. Still slope facilities are very good and the unusually for a place of this size, there are some 15 mountain cafes and bars. Another plus side for St Johann is that this is a cheap resort and very affordable.
