Lake Louise, Canada
Resort life
Lake Louises holiday complex is located a five minutes' drive from the slopes and can be reached by local shuttle bus. The village, which is dominated by the Chateau Lake Louise has a good selection of local facilities and caters well for dot.com millionaires but not for budget-conscious snowboarders. The truth is, Lake Louise has become far too overcrowded with holiday punters and charges excessive prices for everything.
Many visitors prefer to stay in Banff which is a 45min drive from Louise and offers a far greater choice of services at much lower prices. The free bus can be mobbed and can take over an hour. The one affordable option in Lake Louise is the excellent hostel with dorm rooms from CA$30/night www.hihostels.ca tel +1 403 522 2200.

Around Lake Louise the choice of restaurants is excellent, but very pricey. The Chateau is criminally so. The licensed cafe at the youth hostel has the best value food in town.Nightlife
Evenings in Louise are simply lame although Charlie's or The Grill are good for a beer and a game of pool. Banff offers more street-wise entertainment and goes on well into the early hours. The Irish pub is popular as is the Rose and Crown.Accomodation
Accommodation in Lake Louise is very expensive with a number of classy hotels and lodges to choose from. Self-catering is also possible with some reasonable deals available for groups. If you have the cash, the Post Hotel is excellent.
Nearby Banff offers the best selection of affordable places. The Blue Mountain has nightly rates from CA$55 for B&B. The High Country Inn has rooms from CA$75 a night while the Youth Hostel has bunks from $30 per night per person.

Further information
Excellent freeriding on four mountain faces although slopes can get very busy. Facilities in Louise are a bit on the dull side, but overall with Banff as an alternative this is a great destination for all.
