Gulmarg is in the disputed region of Kashmir. A ceasefire has tentatively been in place since 2004 but the odd bomb still goes off. Although tourists haven’t been targeted recently, in the past Kashmiri separatists have kidnapped and executed a few westerners. There is a new $8million Gondola which will take you to 4150 metres. From there you can take one of the drag lifts or descend the vertical drop of 1400metres.
This winter resort was first developed in the late 1940’s, and you don’t have to look too hard to find traces of the Raj. The golf course is one! The closest airport is Srinagar 60 km from resort.
