Geilo, Norway

Introduction

Located roughly 4 hours from Oslo and situated in the Hallingdal Valley, the largest mountain area in Europe, Geilo is the oldest resort in Norway. The well laid out town is easy to get around and lies close to the slopes, making for an easy attack of the runs first thing in the morning. The slopes rise up on two sides of the valley, with terrain that is well maintained, leaving lots of corduroy tracks to mess up in the early hours. Geilo's slopes will suit intermediate and novice riders mostly, with little to set the heart racing for advanced or even competent riders, although there are a few black graded runs. The two separate areas (which aren't connected) rise up to give a maximum lift height of 1173 metres. If you want to ride both places, you'll have to take a snow taxi, which is not included in your lift pass. The Vestila area, which is actually the smaller of the two, has the longer runs, with a mixture of blues, reds and a couple of blacks.

New for season

2004/5: Norway’s coolest half pipe – the Super Pipe at Fugleleiken With a height of 5.70 metres and length of 150 metres, the new half pipe on Geilo’s sunny side looks huge and formidable. It is Northern Europe’s largest half pipe, but it is also suitable for beginners.
More than NOK 1.2 million has been invested in special maintenance equipment for the snowboard parks, for the benefit of our snowboard guests.
