Trysil, Norway
Introduction
Trysil is supposed to be Norway's largest resort and is definitely big by most Norwegian standards, and a very good place to snowboard. Situated just over two hours from Oslo, Trysil is a resort that caters well for its visitors, no matter what time of year. Snowboarding is possible here between the months of November and May, on slopes that cover a large percentage of the Trysilfjellet mountain, which is predominately suited to beginners and basic intermediate riders. There are runs for advanced riders which will keep them interested for some time. Strangely the higher you go, the easier things get, notably at the top section of the slopes, where a wide open and somewhat flat snow field opens up above the tree line
------------------------------------------------------
Trysil, Norway's largest resort, offers 30 lifts which, if you follow the sun around the 67km of piste, you can snowboard 360 degrees around the Trysilfjellet mountain. Situated just over two hours from Oslo, Trysil is a resort that caters well for its visitors, no matter what time of year. This is a perfect resort for both families and beginning or intermediate riders. Advanced riders will be disappointed with Trysil's black runs, as they are predominately clustered together in one area, and are similar to good red runs in Europe. It seems as though they have realised this, so there have been exceptional gains made in the park.
Two thirds of the mountain is a picturesque tree lined winter wonderland, but the top third is bare and featureless. No chairlifts will take you to the top, so unfortunately it's a series of excruiating T-bars, but this is where you can get away from the perfectly groomed pistes. Excitingly, next year a new 6 person chair lift from Fagerasen will take people to the top, although apparently, no other chair lifts can be constructed due to the problems of windage.
Ski-Star, who also own Hemsedal, Are & Salen, have recently taken over Trysil and there now seems to be no stopping the expanding resort. New restaurants, an expanding snow system, piste broadening, new chair lifts, an upgrade to the entire kids area and continuing development in the park means that someone should keep a close eye on Trysil.
For the first time ever this year, Trysil offered a snow guarantee, to start the season off - from the 15th November, they guaranteed, with the help of many snow cannons (they have effectively quadrupled their snow making capacity), 8km of alpine slopes to kick start the season! If this isn't available when you arrive, you can ask for your money back!
With 80% of the accommodation based on the slopes and a couple of great apres bars (ridiculously busy at Easter), Trysil is great as part of your Scandinavian snow-tour.
Being close to the Swedish boarder and only 2.5 hours away from Oslo, most people venture there by car. NOR-WAY bus express travels between Oslo and Trysil, with 7 departures daily. All departures stop by the Oslo International Airport, Gardermoen. In Trysil the bus stops at the Trysil Turistsenter, which is only 100m from the first lift. There are also direct bus routes to Trysil leaving from Gothenburg, Stockholm and Copenhagen - timetable can be found on the www.trysil.com website.
