Resort life

The bars and restaurants range from traditional Austrian Hauses to more modern après ski bars. Walking around the resort you will see many picture traditional family homes which have been converted into excellent places to eat and drink. It is well worth having a night out or a nice meal in one of these. The Gasthof Bichlwirt is particularly nice and if you visit it on some evening you will get to enjoy Herbert playing his Harp.

If you are planning on leaving the gear at home then Niederau has lots of hire shops where you can get a range of boards. Salomon is a popular brand in Sport Thaler and they have reasonable prices available for a weeks hire.

As an alternative to hitting the bars we recommend heading out on a sleigh ride one afternoon, these leave about 16.00 near the The Eating

If you’re looking for nice hearty meals you will find lots of restaurants, hotels and guest houses dotted around Niederau. Hearty stews, soups and dumplings are all traditional fare that will set you up for the day and prices are very reasonable on the whole. The Umbrella Bar at the gondola station provides fast food options and is a great stop for a quick afternoon lunch and beer if you’re after a break from riding this is a good place to head. From the top of the Gondola if you turn right there is also a traditional restaurant where you can get good beer and local food at a good price. On a clear day you might want to sit out and get a tan whilst looking out over the valley.

On an evening many people eat in the hotels with many offering Half Board options this is a great choice as you can get a heart breakfast and four course meal on an evening. There are plenty of also restaurants and fast food options around town if you fancy a change.

The most lively night in the resorts are Mondays where you will find lots of people out and about on the local bar crawls. It’s worth going along to one of these if you want to find the best spots early in the holiday, but either way you will probably find yourself in the cave bar at some point in the week if you are after a late night.

If you’re feeling adventurous you should try local drinks such as Pear schnapps as well. On the slopes and around town beers comes in at about £2.50 to £3.00 a pint so prices are pretty reasonable in comparison to some resorts. After your day on the slopes it is worth a trip to the Umbrella Tent near the gondola where they do good food and reasonably priced beer. The place goes crazy for a drink called Flugl which is around £2.00 a shot you won’t miss it as the tent is virtually a shrine to the drink, expect loud Après music in here and plenty of fun.

For something out of the ordinary we would recommend going to watch Herbert play a traditional Austrian Harp in a non traditional way. With hints of Rock and Roll and Pop music it make for a fun change from the normal

On a sunny day you can chill out on the terrace whilst watching the slopes. This a great place to stop whether you are staying here or not as you can enjoy the sun and a beer before heading out to do some quick laps of the lifts.
