Cauterets Review
Fri 9 January 2004 stevomcd
I lived in the Hautes-Pyrenees area for a year, and rode Cauterets most out of all the local resorts. I have a soft spot for it as I learned to ride there. Overall the place rocks. Great on a powder day, especially since they're often slow to groom all the runs. Otherwise, the whole place has a nice, consistent gradient, well groomed, wide open trails and a good attitude towards snowboarders. It's also a place with lots of natural banks and gullies, meaning that there are natural hits everywhere, in addition to the funpark provided. Lift system is excellent, apart from one chair which is old, very long and a bit slow.
No major backountry freeride terrain available, as it's hard to get out of the main bowl which holds the resort. There are rumours of one nice run on the south facing slopes off the back of the resort...
The place managed to hold my interest for more than 60 days riding in one season, taking me from a complete beginner to a competent rider. Well worth a look if you're in the area.
