Gressoney, Italy

Rated 6 out of 10

Its still quiet - somewhere to chill out.

Thu 3 April 2008 Philip

Went to Gressoney in February. Map still terrible and still quiet - actually that's an understatement - very quiet, and long may it stay that way. Quite a lot of runs are narrow as you get lower down but tend to be wider on the Champuloc side. All the runs are quite long with a bit of steep so you can get quite a wriggle on. Snow wasn't brill when I was there but lots of potential for off piste. Don't go there for the apres ski or party time this is somewhere to chill out in the mountains.

Pap map - but great freeriding

Map does not do this area justice, there is around 150k of runs (if you take of the small unlinked sections). It is the best place to be based in the area linked with Champuluc and Algana. You can ride nearly 1400m vertical from 2980m to 1600m non stop. Great snow, very friendly. Watch out for the Turn/Milan Circus on Sundays, rest of week is queue free. Boarders out numbered by around 8 or 9 to one, but area is boarder friendly only one drag lift, most lifts are high speed. There is no park or pipe here, but if you care to venture off piste, and alot do there are more natural features than you can shake a stick at. New cable car from 3rd valley should be open for this season.

We went there for 10 days in late March 04. Stayed in Albergo del Ponte (4 nights) above the mid gondal stations at 2350m first to the pow in the morning. Good but quality, and exceptional value. Then moved down to Jolanda Sport in Gressoney at the base of the lift. Its a 3* but quality of food and rooms would not be out of place in 4 *. Relatively easy for independant travel from Turin. Train goes up Aosta valley to base of Gressoney valley at Pont Saint Martin. Hotels can organise taxi or mini bus service.

Treat yourself and get there before it becomes too well known.
