Galtur, Austria

Introduction

Galtür is the less famous cousin of Ischgl, 20 minutes away at the head of the Paznaun Valley. Although a small resort, Galtür proves that size doesn't always matter. Whilst Ischgl gets all the attention Galtur is left relatively alone, making it a far quieter place to ride.

The mountain is a short distance from the main town, which is a very Austrian resort, with all the usual trappings.

The terrain is pretty intermediate level except from a couple of steep black runs. The runs are all very open, well pisted, and quiet enough to be taken nicely at speed. On the main face there are plenty of small drops and great terrain to explore between the pistes. There are a number of recognised off-piste routes, which are great before they get too tracked out; the Ballunspitze run is epic fun on a powder day.

The resort zoned things into 6 sectors in 2007/8 season. Sector 4 covers the some freeriding areas, and sector 3 covers the terrain parks. The other sectors you can ignore. The main terrain park which is forever improving is still located under the Klein-Zeinislift

You can buy a lift ticket for the entire Silvretta area (of which Galtür is a part), which includes Ischgl, opening up some 155 miles of terrain. You can also do night riding here, which is not a common thing in Austria.
