The Japanese like to stay on the trails, we like to go off them. It works out quite well if you're a fan of fresh tracks all day right off the lifts. I came late season (Mid-march) and found 10ft snowbanks outside the hostel, spring conditions peppered with 24hr dumps. Easy train from Tokyo. If yu've got more time go to Hokkaido (nth island), av. 15cm per day

This resort is so underrated it is criminal. The snow quality is amazing. The night boarding is incredible. The ultimate however is the ride of the peak ( 20min hike from top chair) down to the cat track, open glades into amazing gullies. You dont need a heli to ride awesome terrain Some days you can still be riding fresh lines late into the day. What else could you ask for.
