There is a big question mark over the future of June Mountain. For the 2012/13 season the mountain will not be open, and there are rumours that in future it will be pitched more towards the family market.
June Mountain is located in the Eastern High Sierra, 17 miles north of its sister resort Mammoth. For an area of such modest size, June offers a richness of riding terrain that is often not found in even in many larger resorts. It's as though some of the best mountain features have been selectively picked and welded together to form a neat package that is user-friendly to a multitude of disciplines. This place has something to offer carvers, freestylers or freeriders of any level. There is a welcome blend of energy-sapping steeps and mellower stuff perfect for cruising. Because of the small size of June it doesn't have package tour status and it has a minimal number of ski schools, making the place a bit of a secret for those in the know and leaving you without lift queues even in peak periods. This all makes the place sound a bit like something resembling heaven, and in many respects it is, especially if there's been a dump and if the park and pipe have been recently re-shaped. Having said that, June can't offer the total variability of the decent larger resorts. Nevertheless, if you don't mind riding the odd run more than once and having to take one foot out along some of the flat green runs, you will get a lot out of the relaxed attitude here, away from the big resort experience.
