Aimee Fuller Talks 'Go Ski Go Board'

Tue 13 Oct 15

Over the last few years Aimee Fuller has risen through the ranks to become one of the UK's most exciting snowboard stars. The World Snowboard Guide grabbed her between trips to find out about her plans for a very busy winter season!

Aimee is a rider at the top of her game, with a high profile media profile including a lively commentary session on the BBC she is proving to be an ideal candidate for promoting the sport to the next generation.

We caught up with Aimee to learn about her work with with Caxton FX researching the recent growth of the UK snow industry and how events such as the Olympics have had a direct effect on the sports popularity. We also find out about her work with Snowsports England promoting the 'Go Ski Go Board Campaign' where she has been hitting the indoor slopes of Great Britain to promote snowboarding to those wanting an introduction to the sport.

Can you  tell us more about your involvement with the GO Ski Go Board campaign?

I am proud to be working with Go Ski GO Board as an ambassador to get more people into our sport, it’s a great initiative bringing people together all around the UK, all ages, different back grounds, proving that snow sport can be accessible! and showing how much fun you can have skiing and snowboarding.

Who is the campaign aimed at and how has the sport changed since you started out?

I want to get anyone and everyone involved in snowboarding, anyone can do it, doesn’t matter about your age, it really is for everyone. There are definitely a greater percentage of women involved in snowsports now, when I first started you couldn’t really rent snowboards at many of the dry slopes and they only had equipment for adults, now it’s for everyone and that’s whats so great about the sport, you can go and ride, meet new people or do it with friends and family!

Growing up who helped you on the road to where you are now?

I just went out and snowboarded, that’s the best advice I can give anyone. Get out there, get active, and have fun with it. I got noticed riding and that’s how I picked up my first sponsor Roxy in 2007, which lead to me joining the GB Junior team, Lesley Mckenna has been a big influence in my career, and is now managing the GB Park and Pipe Program.

Who were your peers and what have been the most valuable lessons you have learnt?

My peers, are the ladies I ride with the most, Cheryl Maas, Jenny Jones, Torah Bright and Silje Norendal. I really look up to Cheryl for her progression, Jenny for leading the charge for the Brits and putting British Snowboarding on the international circuit! Her success has really opened the doors for the younger generations, bringing in funding to support the teams.

Where are you now and what have you been upto early in the season?

I am currently on a flight from France to Munich. I am heading up to Hintertux for that start of the season. I can’t wait to get on snow. I have been riding indoors a little at The Snow Centre the past month, and I also made a trip to Slovakia to check out the new dry slope / air bag set up which was really cool! BUT YEAH, now I am snow bound. Excited!

You seem to be doing a lot to support the UK this season are there any particular events you are looking forward too?

The UK scene is booming right now, there are so many people stoked on snowboarding after the Olympic buzz! I will be at the Ski and Snowboard Show with Caxton and GB Park and Pipe hanging out! It’s a real shame the London Freeze got postponed, but I hope to compete in the Big Air if it returns in the New Year! I haven’t competed in Big Air as yet, it’s a new Olympic discipline, and an event on home turf would fulfill an all time ambition.

We saw you took part in Nelsons Tour De Test Valley, it was for a great cause how did you find taking on a totally different challenge from snowboarding?

Nelson’s Tour De Test Valley is an event that means a lot to me, I used to work with Nelson on the GB Team, he was a man I looked up to and he inspired me not only on my snowboard, but also my fitness. He was an avid cyclist, so it’s a great event to remember him and raise money for the charity CALM. The year before last I entered the 100 mile, this year I did the 50 as I was snowboarding over the summer I didn’t get chance to train. So I just did 50 with no training haha.

What trips are you looking forward to most this year and who are you most excited about riding with?

I am really looking forward to getting out to Austria, riding the Tirol region and also Flachau come the new year. The great thing about Austria is the terrain, you can ride powder and park so close to home! There is the World Champs scheduled in China too. So that will be a really unique trip.

Where can people find out about your work with Caxton FX?

I’m an ambassador for currency provider Caxton FX, as part of their Caxton AllStars programme which uses inspiring women who strive for excellence in their sporting careers to inspire others. We have the #SnowSelfie and #FlipCardChallenge competitions going live in November. I will be on their stand at the Ski and Snowboard Show on Thursday 5th November, so come and say hello.

If you could head to any mountain this season where would it be?

My favourite resort this time of year has to be Stubai in the Tirol, it has one of the Best parks in Europe! It’s super easy to get to, flying into Innsbruck, it’s 30 minutes from the city! So it’s perfect for venturing out of the town to see the surroundings as well. When the season kicks off, I also love visiting Flauchau, Absolut park, it’s also only 45 minutes from Salzburg Airport, it has a fast lap, it’s slopes are quiet so it’s perfect for getting the runs in!

As a whole, it's more about the fridges and carpets than the real stuff, but with good conditions and ideally mid-week, Scotland can surprise

Hintertux

Great open pistes and a good summer location

Flachau

Top place for beginners and intermediates but advanced riders will find it limiting after a short while. Freestylers will need to travel a short distance to the parks but it's well worth it. Buses link the huge area and the town is very spread out.
