In the past snowboarders used shoes for hiking in deep snow. Having to struggle to follow  skiers up to the summit was normal back in the days. With the splitboard, long and strenuous hikes are not a problem any more. Snowboarders now have the opportunity to go further, approach undiscovered terrain and ride powder far away from the pistes and crowds. 

Questions? Which path should I choose while ascending and decending? How about the avalanche danger, snow stability and terrain traps? What is the perfect board for me and what gear should I buy? The Volkl Split & Freeride Camps was founded three years ago by former Freeride World Champion Aline Bock and event manager/shredder Pia Schroeter. With their combined experience and knowledge, you can trust your questions will be answered. 

"With the camps we give our participants the opportunity to try out splitboarding under perfect guidance," explains organizer Pia Schroeter. "Backed with professional mountain guides, appropriate accomodation and suitable tour planning, we create the perfect parameters for an easy start. The right gear and equipment is also important so we make sure that all  splitboard camp participants can try out the complete range of our products at all camps."

Besides using the latest Volkl Untrac and brand-new Xsight Splitboards, campers can test ABS backpacks, shovels, probes and transceivers from Ortovox. Marker helmets, goggles and Deeluxe freeride boots can also be tried out for free. Blue Tomato offers free goodie bags and HAD will be giving out headwear to all campers. The camp organizers will be easy to spot  wearing high-end outerwear by Volkl Performance Wear.

The registration proceeds according to each individuals splitboard riding experience, riding level and personal fitness. The tours are always set up in small groups guided by a certified mountain guide and a Volkl teamrider.

"The beginner camps (level 1) are all about splitboard handling and basic technique involving short and easy tours in combination with detailled avalanche training, ascents and decents. The intermediate groups (level 2) step up and are longer and more challenging," Aline Bock says. „The advanced camps (level 3) are way more intense. Handling and assessing crevasses, rapelling techniques into steep chutes, technical runs and teaching what to look for while choosing the perfect line are all part of the program of the advanced camp."

The Volkl Split & Freeride Camps 2016 will be kicking off in January in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. This resort is situated at the far end of the Tyrolean Oetztal valley and measures up to be the most snowy regions in Austria. Daily expeditions will start from the four-star appartment house Haus Gurl. 

The next camp will happen in late January in the eastern region of Austria at the resort of Innerkrems, Kaernten. Together with the four-star Hotel Berghof Innerkrems and Sport Schiffer, the beginner camp program is set with the basics of splitboarding, avalanche training and risk management. 

Camp 3 will bring it back to the freeride eldorado at the infamous „Kalkkoegel around the Axamer Lizum and Kemater Alm which is just a stone´s throw away from Innsbruck. 

Home base of camp 4 is at the amazing mountain hut called the Diggl Freeride Farm in the Zillertal valley. This advanced level camp is only for experienced splitboarders willing to tour up many height meters during the day to earn big runs down finishing with chill nights in the hot tub and wooden sauna house. 

The last two camps are going to happen at Stubai Glacier. Splitboard rookies can learn everything from day one in the beginner and intermediate camp in March and the experienced freeriders can push the limits during the advanced level camp in late April. The four-star Hotel Stubaierhof Neustift is and always has been the perfect home for riders in the Stubai valley.
