Choice Splitboard Camp Stubai Glacier – 15th-17th March, 2019
The third Choice Splitboard Camp 2019 has obviously been the camp of highest adrenaline levels. And not only, because Stubai Glacier scores with incredible touring opportunities and absolute snow safety in Austria´s greatest glacier skiing resort.
Imagine the weather god in a great mood, delivering fresh snow and bluebird days while two highly motivated mountain guides do their best to provide an unforgettable weekend packed with adventures and happy moments for everyone involved. That´s literally been the Choice Splitboard Camp 2019 at Stubai Glacier!
Only a 45 minutes drive from the Tyrolean Capital Innsbruck, Stubai Glacier sits high up enthroned at 3.210 metres above sea level. For the third Choice Splitboard Camp 2019, Austria´s greatest glacier skiing area definitely deserved its title as the "Kingdom of Snow." Thirteen highly motivated splitboarders traveled to Stubai on March 15th and checked in at the brand-new appartment´s by Sepp & Hanni´s. After the first wellness round at Hotel Stubaierhof Neustift, the group came together for a welcome drink with the mountain guides from Stubai Alpin. Finishing the tour planning, everybody was looking forward to an action-packed weekend and the delicious 5-course dinner at Stubaierhof. The splitboarders finally chose the right board from Amplid or Jones and bindings from Spark R&D or Karakoram for their individual setup. Backpacks ready and all adventurers were off to bed early.
On Saturday, the group left the house after breakfast to meet the Stubai Alpin guides Christoph Stern and Marco Span at Stubai Glacier. The glacier showed off with fresh powder snow and bluebird, that the freeriders decided to first explore the amazing freeride runs of the Powder Department. No climbs and first tracks all morning long, what a great experience! Satisfied and happy, everyone changed to hiking mode at the top station of Daunjochbahn by lunch time. From there, they headed splitboarding towards Hinterer Daunkopf on 3.225 metres above sea. For the last steep bit, they put the splitboards on the backpacks to climb up the rocky ridge while being challenged facing strong winds. Arrived at the top, it was rather uncomfortable and exposed, that the splitboarders decided to change back to riding mode quickly.
Cruising over the impressive glacier, the snowboarders found themselves riding into the sunset of the breathtaking scenery of Bockkar and all the way down to Amberger Hütte, where they had a well-deserved break. Following the snowy mountain road, they made it to Grieß in the Sulz valley, where the taxi was awaiting them. Sunburnt and happy, the group returned to Stubaierhof just in time for dinner.
On Sunday, the way was all up to the top of Schaufeljochbahn on 3.100 metres. After the transceiver check, the snowboarders were passing the snow park to head towards Hildesheimer Hütte. At 2.800 hm, they stopped and changed to hiking mode. In a great mood, the splitboarders started touring over Pfaffenferner, following their highly motivated guides all the way up to Pfaffenjoch (3.212 Hm). After a happy lunch break in the sun, everybody got their boards together for riding the impressive Sulzenauferner, finding some little freshies and passing great crevasses. Arriving at Sulzenau Huette (2.191 Hm), the mountain guides installed a rope for abseiling the participants into a steeper face.
After this action, all adrenaline levels were high and everybody was excited and super stoked. Looking back at „the face“ the group kept riding down the Sulzenau Alm and took it with a little forest run to arrive safely at Grawa Alm. To end a perfect weekend, the adventurers enjoyed a great traditional meal, before packing up and heading home again. What a weekend! Great shout out to Stubai Glacier for all the support and Christoph Stern and Marco Span from Stubai Alpin for amazing guiding and relentless motivation! Two days of splitboarding are definitely not enough to explore Stubai Glacier – we think at The Choice Adventure Company!
