Recent cold weather and snow in the capital city was a tell-tale sign of the large amounts of snow that has fallen at Colorado Resorts all throughout the second week of November. As the storms engulf the mountains, they have imposed a sense that ski-season is now beginning in earnest.

Wolf Creek, although the third resort to open for the season, received a whopping 22 inches since Monday, as layers upon layers have given the southernmost Colorado resort plenty to offer skiers and riders during the early season.

Arapahoe Basin and Loveland, with their annual “first to open” race done and dusted, have enjoyed consistent snow in large part to their prime positions on the Continental Divide. This week’s snow dumps gave them a respective eight and nine-and-a-half inches, adding to their already substantial bases from previous snowfalls.

Copper Mountain’s timing in opening a week ago seemed almost too good to be true, as a hefty nine inches fell in just the last 72 hours. The accumulated snowfall will allow Copper to open its Green Acres Learning Area tomorrow.

Winter Park, the next CSCUSA resort scheduled to open, on Wednesday, November 17, was given a heavy dosage of snow with nine inches falling in the past 48 hours.

Many resorts are scheduled to open just in time for Thanksgiving, and benefited from the week’s great snowfall, including Aspen Mountain – six inches (opens November 25), Crested Butte – seven inches (opens November 24), Monarch – six inches (opens November 24), Purgatory – five inches (opens November 25), Snowmass – six inches (opens November 25), and Steamboat – 15 inches (opens November 24).

Other November opening dates include Eldora (opens November 19), Silverton (opens with unguided tours in late November), Ski Cooper (opens November 25), and Telluride (opens November 25).

Heavy snow weeks such as the one Colorado just experienced have energized the resort staffs, and with their opening dates falling so close to the recent storm, excitement has reached peak levels.
