COURTIER-JONES AND THIDLING 1ST IN BRITS HALFPIPE!

Thu 03 Apr 14
The Brits Halfpipe Lewis Courtier Jones

As a gloomy morning ramped up to a bluebird afternoon, the Trespass British Snowboard Halfpipe Championships got underway with 33 competitors taking to the ‘incredible’ Tignes Super Pipe

With ridiculous amounts of style, and a hefty amount of technicality, Courchevel residing Lewis Courtier-Jones (18) took first place for the men whilst podium familiar Ayla Thidling (14) took it for the women.

During practice, the riders were worried they might have to battle against the elements, and below par light, but the sun managed to fight its way through, making for yet another sunny snowboard session.

In the overall men’s category despite the competition being close Lewis secured his win with a massive front five, a huge method, front nine, back five and finishing with a front seven. Named the most consistent rider of the day with bags of style, Lewis nabbed the overall and junior title to add to an already successful week. Coming in second and with every grab boned, 18 year old Max Thidling took second place today. Also going big was Jamie Trinder (19) who took third place with a big fat frontside indie, backside method, front three into a crippler and then a front five into a tail grab to a backside alley-oop. His second podium spot of the week, let’s see if tomorrow he can make the hat-trick.

Stoked on his win, Lewis said: “The pipe was in perfect condition and the sun was out. One run was enough in the end but I was gutted to fall.”

On the ladies side of things, previous BRITS shredders stepped up the ante, surprising judges with back to back three’s in the pipe today. Girls that have been on the British Championships scene for the past few years had brought their ‘A game’ laying down new tricks and setting the bench mark for next year. Scoring her second podium place of the week but this time scooping the gold, Ayla Thidling (14) threw down a massive front three followed by a cab three in her run, both out the top of the pipe. Nathalie Silkstone (17) secured herself the silver with clean back to back three’s but had an unfortunate final run knocking herself unconscious. She thankfully came round and was all smiles on the podium. It was unsponsored rider, Ellie Soutter (13) that took home third place with a huge variety of cleanly executed tricks including indie & stalefish grabs, front three’s and switch straight airs. One to watch, this new chick on the block can most definitely shred.

Here is what four year BRITS competitor Ayla had to say on her win: “It was brilliant fun, a big adrenaline rush and such a surprise to win against such talent.”

Standout mentions go to Gabriel Adams who at just eleven years old qualified through to the overall final and was getting right to the top of the pipe. After he finished up in 7th place, head judge Andy Mills had a few words to say: “It’s rare you see such great style in a really young rider. Usually this develops over time but Gabriel has nailed it already. Good hope for the future of British snowboarding.” Here’s also to Mia Brookes who at just seven years old and around 3ft tall is riding a 22ft pipe – you do the maths!
