Fridge Festival Vienna Draws in the crowds!
What a weekend it was for the first ever edition of the Fridge Festival Vienna, the weather just about held out for 32 of the finest snowboarders to descend on Austria’s capital to do battle!
With 18,000 people attending over the weekend, it was one of the local boys that snatched a medal much to the delight of the natives. The home crowd celebrated late into the night to the sounds of The Prodigy, Paul Kalkbrenner, Pendulum DUB FX and many more.

World Snowboard Tour
The lights of Vienna’s skyline illuminated the background of the 36m high jump as the 8 finalists prepared to drop in for the finals. With riders like Marco Grilc, Kevin Backström, Tim Kevin Ravnjak, Sven Thorgren and Max Burinot making it through the finals, the caliber of riding on display was world class.
It was the local Austrian homeboy Mathias Weissenbacher that took home the bronze medal with his backside double cork 1080 getting the biggest cheer of the night from the crowd, as well as impressing the judges with his skills.
Kyle Mack of America was in the top spot from his first run with a super stylish backside double cork 1080 japan looking like it might be unbeatable from the go. On his last run he gave it his all as he attempted to throw down the elusive triple cork, but he wasn’t able to bring it round to his feet and had to watch as the last rider of the night prepared to drop in.
It was Kim Rune Hansen from Norway that dropped in last and he powered into a flawless switch backside double cork 1080 that came with a side-order of amplitude, sending it deep into the landing and sending him to the 1st place position much to the delight of the crowd. DANCING WITH THE DJ’S
With the snowboarders having done battle on the jump, it was time to for the crowd to throw some shapes to the sounds of Paul Kalkbrenner, The Prodigy and Pendulum before the prize giving. Nokia presented some special awards to Markus Mathis, Herby Thaler and Tor Lundstrom for their efforts.
After that, the party moved to the 3,200m2 indoor arena for the elite of the electronic music world to provide entertainment into the small hours of the morning.

Plans are already in motion for the return of the Fridge Festival Vienna for a 2014 edition says Tamás Kádár, Managing Director of the event “ It was our first event here in Austria and obviously there are things we can improve on in the future, but we’re pleased that the first edition had so much atmosphere. We’d like to thank all the visitors for coming and supporting the festival and we hope to see you next year!”
