Mt Buller has welcomed more than 5800 registered entries for this year’s event, which is a significant increase on previous year’s participation numbers and a positive trend for snowsports in Australia.
 
Snow conditions are also ideal for this year’s competition, thanks to significant falls over the past 2 weeks blanketing the resort in fresh snow.
 
Event Manager David Speirs said today that the Victorian Interschools was all about getting young  snowboarders involved in competitive snowsports.
 
“We are ecstatic to have a 5% increase in event entries for this year’s competition.  The Victorian Interschools are all about getting students involved in snowsports and giving them the chance to represent their school, while also having fun.  From the start our aim was to make the event as affordable and accessible as possible for all Victorian students, so we are thrilled to welcome even more entries in 2013.  It also provides an opportunity for athletes to develop their passion for snowsports competition, with some taking this experience into their future careers.  Current Winter Olympians like Snowboardcross World Champion Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin all enjoyed their first taste of competition at the Interschools, before taking on the world’s best at Olympic level.
 
“The spirit of competition and the camaraderie amongst all of the competitors and schools has also been extraordinary.  We have been blessed with fantastic snow conditions this week and the facilities provided by the Mt Buller team have allowed to us to host a terrific event.  We now look forward to the last few days of competition before Saturday night’s closing ceremony.  Then we will turn our attention to the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships which we look forward to hosting at Mt Buller from September 4 to 8,” Speirs said.

The Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships, were first staged in 1958 at Mt Buller and this year’s event is the  56th time the Championships have been held at Mt. Buller.

The 7 Interschools SnowSports disciplines available in 2013 are: Alpine Giant Slalom, Skiercross, Moguls, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboardcross, Classical Cross Country and Cross Country Relay.
The first Schools to compete were Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College, since then the Victorian Interschools SnowSports Championships (or Interschools) have grown to become one of the premiere School sporting competitions in Victoria, with over 150 Schools competing annually in the event.
