Ischgl expands terrain for 2013-14 season

Mon 23 Sep 13
Location of new piz-val-gronda lift in Ischgl for 2013-14

A new gondola up to Piz Val is set to open up one of the old classic freeriding hiking routes and expand lift accessible terrain in Ischgl for the first time in 28 years this season

The Piz Val Gronda will offer views of the entire Fimbatal valley including the Fluchthorn, Wildspitze and Hohe Riffler. From here, a 3 km red piste leads across 517 m of altitude down into the Vesiltal valley. A particular highlight is the newly developed freeriding area which extends down into the Fimbatal valley. Untouched deep snow slopes away from the mainstream await off-piste skiers and freeriders here. Broad slopes and sporty peaks and troughs can be enjoyed direct from the mountain station with powder snow fun over 900 m of altitude to the Gampenalp. This new area will enhance Ischgl’s status on the freeriding scene and presents both skiers and snowboards with a new challenge. Following the addition of the new cableway and piste, in the winter season of 2013/14 Ischgl will have over 44 lift facilities and endless kilometres of pistes extending as far as Samnaun in Switzerland. Good powder snow is guaranteed because over 90% of the Ischgl ski resort is located in high Alpine areas at over 2,000 m above sea level. Holidaymakers can therefore look forward to guaranteed snow from the start of the season on 28 November until the start of May.

Ischgl bergstation pardaschgratbahn new for 2013-14

The new lift is the first expansion to the Ischgl ski resort since 1989. After 28 years of planning and regular consultations with the state of Tyrol and the nature protection authorities, Silvrettaseilbahn AG was finally granted authorisation to build a new lift, the Piz Val Gronda. The region is making an investment in its future with this long-planned technical ski development. The ski resort has created a new tourist attraction for winter sports fans, especially freeriders. Techie enthusiasts can follow the building work at http://bautagebuch.ischgl.com. For more information, see www.ischgl.com.

Construction on the new Pardatschgratbahn cable car started in summer 2013. When the development is completed in winter 2014/15, the existing 4-seater gondola monocable lift will be replaced and partly dismantled. The new lift will transport winter sports fans in Ischgl from the eastern heart of the resort up to the 2,624 m Pardatschgrat in record time. The 1,251 m height difference is the largest in the world to be covered by a tri-cable gondola. But guests do not need a head for height as the gondola will be 138 m maximum from the ground at all times. 31 gondolas will each transport 28 people to the ski resort in cabins developed especially for Ischgl. These offer greater comfort with seats for all passengers. And that’s not all: the upper part of the current cable car from the middle station will remain intact to transport passengers up to the Pardatschgrat as a panorama lift. This means that the popular descents from the Pardatschgrat to the middle station and in Velill can also be enjoyed in the morning without having to wait. The mountain station for the new cable car will be to the east of the existing monocable mountain station building and will offer disabled access to the Restaurant Pardorama.

Ischgl Winter

Ischgl has plenty of good wide intermediate slopes, and hidden off-piste stashes. A super fast lift system, a season that lasts until May, great terrain park, and the most full on apres in the Alps, completes the package.
