Seb Toutant and Jamie Anderson win mile high 2014

Wed 27 Aug 14
Women's Podium Carlton Dry

It was a historic day of some never-before-seen snowboarding for the Finals of The Mile High presented by Carlton Dry at Perisher, a World Snowboard Tour 4Star event.

The world’s best snowboarders took the sport to a new level just six months after first wow-ing the world with their Slopestyle skills at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Sebastien Toutant (CAN) was the standout rider in today’s 10-man, 90-minute jam session Slopestyle Final, consistently going bigger and better than the rest to win the $5000 winner’s cheque. Sebastien’s best run included a boardslide-to-backflip off the top of the A-frame wallride, and a monster Backside Double Cork 1260 on the bottom jump.

“Today was really fun! It was a long day, but it was worth it,” said French Canadian Sebastien Toutant after his win. “It was my first contest of the season, and I was just trying to get my tricks back. It’s nice to switch up the format of contests, like The Mile High has done. The final was kind of just like a big snowboarding session, just riding in the park, you know. It was an easy format, just an hour and a half of jams – it really shows a rider’s consistency.”

Sebastien Toutant is a former winner of The Australian Slopestyle Tour’s Stylewars, and with his win he is now eligible to aim for the $25,000 Carlton Dry Double Down prize if he also wins at Falls Creek next week.

“I love Australia!” Toutant continued. “It’s been really fun so far. It’s always sunny, and never really too cold, so it’s been really easy to go from our Canadian summer to your winter.”

Max Eberhardt (CAN) and Torstein Horgmo (NOR) placed second and third after several runs of outstanding and varied riding in a field that was stacked with 16 of the top 20 current world-ranked snowboarders. Australian Olympian Scotty James (AUS) showed his world-class form by placing ninth in the strongest ever field of winter sports competitors ever seen in Australia.

Olympic Gold Medallist and long-time Slopestyle winner, Jamie Anderson (USA) continued her winning ways to take top spot on The Mile High Women’s podium today. Jamie qualified for the six-woman Finals in first place, and showed the Perisher crowd her big spins, big airs and technical rail riding that have taken her to first-place finishes at the biggest competitions in the world.

“It was so fun today!” beamed Jamie Anderson after her win. “It was one of the best jam sessions I’ve ever done. I love the format of The Mile High, and the competition. Just good vibes, you know. It was really cool to see the level of riding here today. It makes you progress, and want to try new tricks. I’m so happy to be a part of the Mile High.”

With her first-place finish Jamie will also have a chance for the Carlton Dry Double Down $25,000 if she also wins Stylewars at Falls Creek next week.

There were some never-seen-before tricks thrown in Perisher’s world-class Slopestyle park today, but none better than the Double Backside Rodeo 1260 by Maxence Parrot (CAN). It was the first time this trick has ever been landed in competition and it secured Maxence $1000 for the Carlton Dry 30 Best Trick.

“It’s actually a trick I learned three years ago, but I only did it once, and I was kind of scared of it actually,” Maxence said after his win. “It’s a big trick, but that big jump was perfect to try it on again. And if I can put it down at other contests I’ll be really happy. Australia has such a good vibe: such good weather and the riders here are great. It’s just perfect here!”

Kjersti Ostgaard Buaas (NOR) won the Women’s Carlton Dry 30 for Best Trick with her Frontside 720 mute. “I don’t really have words for how well this day has evolved,” Kjersti said after winning the $1000. “You get so inspired by the other riders, and the jam session format was different to most contests. I’ll definitely be coming back to The Mile High.”

The Mile High snowboarders and freeskiers will soon head south to Falls Creek, Victoria for the final event of The Australian Slopestyle Tour (“AST”): Stylewars, from 1-3 September.
