ki resorts in Switzerland are under pressure. Snow sport tourists today demand modern lift infrastructure and guaranteed snow despite climate change. Ski lift operators are forced to undertake significant investments despite the fact that visitor numbers are falling. Various ski resorts have reacted by heavily discounting season passes. This is a development that is worrying many tourism experts.

Ticketcorner, the pioneer in sales of online ski tickets, is well acquainted with these dynamics by way of operating a booking platform for more than 70 Swiss ski lift operators and has developed a new, flexible pricing tool which takes account of the key drivers while also ensuring that the needs of guests and ski lift operators are satisfied. The new solution will be launched this winter jointly with SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun.

In a similar way to airline and hotel prices, the effective sales prices vary every day and depend on a large number of factors such as the season, the day of the week, the booking date and the weather. Those who book early can benefit by snapping up a day in the sun at very low cost. If you decide late, you will pay a higher price. “Our solution differs from other pricing models in the market as it offers benefits to all parties involved – skiers can benefit from lower prices, while ski lift operators enjoy an increase in demand on peak days,” says Ticketcorner CEO Andreas Angehrn.

Guests influence the price

“Our flexible pricing system is a model which enables guests to influence the price of their own ski passes,” says Franz-Xaver Simmen, Member of the Board of Directors at Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG. In Andermatt-Sedrun, ski passes are available for adults starting at just 37 francs, for adolescents at 25 francs, children at 13 francs and students/senior citizens at 34 francs. Families and groups can benefit from an additional 10 percent discount. There are no more fixed prices, except for season tickets and single trips.

The prices resulting from the new flexible model depend on a range of factors. Skiing will generally be cheaper for those who book early and families. Guests at SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun will also benefit from significantly lower prices during the week and in the shoulder season. A day pass on ten weekdays from 8 to 12 and 15 to 19 January 2018 will cost just 10 francs. “The new low entry level prices available at SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun are aimed at encouraging greater demand during traditionally quieter periods. Furthermore, we want more guests to book online,” explains SkiArena CEO Silvio Schmid. There will be no price changes for annual passes which are available for 875 francs for adults. This offering has been upgraded by season passes for AndermattSedrun-Disentis, the Surselva ski pass, the SnowPass Graubünden or the Central Switzerland snow pass.

Ski for seven months

The ski season at SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun now lasts for seven months from November to May. This has been made possible by extensive investments in artificial snowmaking and snow farming. In the 2017/2018 season, three new ski lifts will start operating in the SkiArena to open up the area between Andermatt and Sedrun to skiers. This expansion, extending the area and modernising the equipment will make the Andermatt-Sedrun ski resort extremely attractive for all skiers.
