Taylor Gold is 1st in the double pipe!
Under clear blue skies, Colorado’s own Taylor Gold graced the top of the podium at the Red Bull Double Pipe event, the first-ever snowboarding contest featuring two 22’ tall, side-by-side superpipes complete with rails, wallrides, channels and other unique features scattered throughout the custom built snow feature.
After a two-hour jam session in the morning, the top eight competitors advanced to the finals Sunday afternoon. Each rider took three runs, with the best run determining their score. Judging was based on their line chosen through the pipes, the sequence of tricks, the amount of risk in the run and the progression of new tricks and lines presented.
Judge Tom Zikas explained, "This event pushed the creativity of snowboarding. With the first-ever double pipe we saw 360 transfers and backside lipslides on ten-foot extensions. The overall use and flow of the double pipe was amazing, especially to see the overall tricks and combinations the riders put together."
Gold put together a run consisting of a double Michaelchuck, a 50-50 frontside180 transfer and a Cab 1080 - ultimately earning the top prize by showcasing his style, creativity and use of the whole course by transferring back-and-forth between the two superpipes in his final run. "I wanted to prove that I'm not just a pipe jock and show that I can do something different and Red Bull Double Pipe allowed me to do that. This is where halfpipe is going to be headed," explained Gold.

Including the outside walls, the overall feature was 180’ wide and over 550’ long, making it the largest halfpipe structure ever built to date.
Chase Josey and Arthur Longo joined Gold on the podium with a slew of tricks including a switch double backside alley-oop rodeo and a back one off the hip to a cab 7.
Final results:
1. Taylor Gold 95.6, 2. Chase Josey 91.4, 3. Arthur Longo 88.6, 4. Greg Bretz 85.6, 5. Gabe Ferguson 84.0, 6. Benji Farrow 79.8, 7. Christian Haller 58.6, 8. Scotty Lago 24.8
