Zoe Gillings from board bumps to baby bumps
Zoe Gillings has long been one of the UK top snowboarders, in recent years she has featured reguarlly in the high impact sport of boardercross. We caught up with Zoe as she gets ready for the new challenge of motherhood and how she plans to balance this with her goal of reaching the Olympics in 2018.
How has your training regime changed since finding out you’re pregnant?
With my due date fast approaching, I’m looking forward to settling into parenthood and getting to grips with being a mum for the first time, then I’ll be looking towards qualifying for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. I’m really excited for motherhood, but also can’t wait to hit the slopes once again!
It’s really important to me that I return to snowboarding stronger and ready to give it my all, so I’ve focused on staying fit and healthy during my pregnancy, which should really help me when I return to training.
I’ve kept up with my fitness, but I’ve had to modify my workouts to make them baby-safe by limiting heavy weights and impact. I’ve managed to get the balance just right, but I don’t think I could have stopped completely.

What are your intentions for training for the next Winter Olympics?
I’m definitely fully focused on my training and I am hoping to come back better than ever and ready for the qualification period for PyeongChang.
I really admired how quickly Jessica Ennis came back to her sport after pregnancy and I want to do the same. There are so many great examples of women doing amazing things whilst pregnant and coming back fitter and stronger after giving birth – I’m hoping that I’ll get the same benefits when I return to training.
How do you feel about the recent revelations about Sochi?
I think it’s disappointing to hear of anyone cheating or being underhanded in sport, particularly when we all work so hard to give our very best in training and during competitions.
How is your funding going for the next Olympic Games?
It’s going well and I’m working with some brilliant companies and brands who are supporting me.
I’m really focused on giving it my all in the lead up to 2018 and being a key part of Team GB. I am incredibly proud to be representing my country, and to be stood alongside my teammates with ‘Great Britain’ on my back is, for me, one of my greatest achievements.
I’m very patriotic and proud to be British, and I hope to inspire others to get involved in sport too.

What is your favourite resort to train in?
I really like training in Canada. Whistler is a great resort with brilliant slopes and terrain, I always have really enjoyable and testing sessions when training there.
Where will you be spending winter this year – at home as a new mum or out training in the mountains?
I’ll definitely be enjoying time as a new mum and I’m already so excited to meet our new arrival in a couple of weeks. Settling into motherhood will definitely be my main priority but I know I’ll also be itching to get back out on my board too.
With the next Olympics drawing closer I want to make sure I’m ready and will be fully focussed on improving my skills so I can qualify and represent my country in 2018.

I’m still really excited to be continuing my work with defibshop as their brand ambassador and supporting their cause. Defibrillators are so important in sport, and I’m very proud to help raise more awareness of how essential this piece of life-saving equipment can be.
And obviously I’m really excited to meet my baby and start the next chapter as a mum!
